My husband and I are the very definitions of bookworms. We can spend hours in bookstores browsing and hours sitting in the same room silently if we are both engrossed in a good book. We passed this trait along to our little ones as well.

With the hectic schedule modern-day life offers, I feel it is really important that everyone in our house gets a little downtime each day. Sometimes to just relax. Sometimes downtime involves naps. Other times we like to craft. More often than not, downtime is filled with reading. We all like to read independently and we each have a stack of books to get through, but occasionally we find books that are so much fun, we all like to read them together. We call these our “family read alouds”.

Here we voted and compiled our 5 favorite family read alouds for October.

Number 1

Roald Dahl’s The Witches! I’ll be honest I didn’t know much about this one until my girls came home from school and explained that the entire elementary school was reading it together. So naturally, I bought a copy for us to have here at home. It’s hilarious and tons of fun. Even the three-year-old enjoys it. It’s about a young boy and his adventure escaping the witches that despise smelly children. It’s full of funny things with just a hint of thrill and danger. Bonus! the movie based on this book is now on amazon prime. When we finished the book we had a themed movie night. My littles did get a little freaked out during a few moments of the movie, so gauge that carefully on your kids bravery level.

Number 2

Hardly Haunted By Jessie Sima is an adorable book that follows a house that desperately wants to be a home. She wonders if her creaking hinges and banging pipes might give families the wrong idea. Is she haunted? Will any family accept her? Grab this cute book for a few laughs and a good read.

Number 3

Amelia Bedelia was always one of my favorite books as a kid. The new series is just as fun and silly. Here we have Amelia Bedelia Scared Silly. In this book, Amelia helps her new friend enjoy the holiday even though some things don’t quite go according to plan. The book even includes some fun activities, crafts, and recipes to make along with the story.

Number 4

Okay if you have little bitty kids like my son and my students then the Don’t Push the Button books are a must. These interactive stories create giggles you can hear three houses away. I love interactive stories for younger students because they engage all modes of learning. For preschoolers especially this is incredibly important for their stage of development. Another great interactive book for this age group is There’s a Monster in Your Book.

This one will also have you giggling as you try to shake, blow, and push the monster out of your book. Be careful though, once the monster is out of the book he might be in your room!

Number 5

Scaredy Bat and the Frozen Vampire. This is a new series for us as well. I am finding that these are at the perfect reading level for my 7-year-old and a nice easy read for my 9-year-old. In this book, we follow Ellie a young vampire who is afraid of everything. Although continually teased by her sister over it, she gains courage from her friends and overcomes her fears to solve mysteries. An excellent lesson in pushing yourself past your fears. Scaredy Bat and the Frozen Vampires is the first book in the enchanting Scaredy Bat supernatural mystery series. If you like brave heroines, family-friendly humor, and interactive crime-solving, then you'll love Marina Bowman's fast-paced mystery.

Bonus Book

We have a hard time narrowing it down to just five so I always add a bonus book. Today’s bonus book comes with an added treat from a good friend of mine. Follow the link here to watch Dem Bones with Timmie and complete a fun craft.

“Colorful torn paper collages bring to life this classic African American spiritual. The frolicking skeletons will captivate children and adults while they sing along with this well-known, catchy song. Accompanied by interesting, informative "bone facts" this book makes a wonderful addition to both home and classroom libraries and a fun treat for Halloween! ”
